An 18-year-old boy locks himself in his room, mesmerized for hours by the corpse-filled video game Doom, while shock-rocker Marilyn Manson screams obscenities from the stereo. Shelved nearby are a video collection, including the graphically violent film Natural Born Killers, and a diary, replicating the unrestrained expressions of hate and death, published on the boy's personal website. Should this boy's media preferences be cause for alarm? The question is not new, but the April 20,1999 massacre of 12 students and a teacher by fellow Columbine High students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold has added urgency to the search for answers. The Littleton, Colorado teenagers reportedly immersed themselves in the same media described above, even producing and starring in their own murderous video before gunning down their classmates, and apparently taking their own lives. We live in a world of violence -- Kosovo, Bosnia, the West Bank, and abortion clinics.The value of human life has reduced to, simply, a few vital organs in a hollow body. Life is no longer viewed as the sacred and amazing gift that it is. Human life is now only a temporary, useful commodity. And, when it is no longer useful? Well, it can be thrown away, like used Kleenex. This irreverence for life has been a result of numerous hours of senseless violence society feeds into their brains every day. Yet, media representatives defend the entertainment industry, denying any direct link between violent media and violent behavior. In many peoples' living rooms, there sits an outlet for violence that often goes unnoticed. It is the television. The children who view it are often pulled into its realistic world of violent scenes with sometimes devastating results.Much effort has gone into showing why this glowing box, and the action that takes place within it, mesmerizes children. Research shows that it is definitely a major source of violent behavior in children. The statistics prove time and time again that aggression and television viewing do go hand in hand.Research shows the truth about television violence and children. Some are trying to fight this problem, while others are ignoring it, hoping it will go away with yesterday’s trash. Still, others do not even seem to care. However, the facts are undeniable. The experiments carried out, all point to one conclusion: television violence causes children to be violent, and the effects can be life-long.Here is the scene: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and a well-armed Elmer Fudd are having a standoff in the forest.

Time Management Between College and Busy Life

Finding time for yourself while having a busy college schedule, may mean different things to different students, in the way that they use their time, but the end-result is the same: time without schoolwork! While some feel that using the gym is entertainment, others think that it is a dreaded necessity, the point is well taken; it is time to think, decompress, eliminate stress, alone or with a friend, as they are exercising together. The problem is that most college kids save their homework for Sunday night. Instead of planning properly and getting most of it done before a Saturday night party, they procrastinate. Many kids drink in college, so they already should know that the pleasure of this procrastination is not worth the pain, along with the remorse of some actions caused by drinking, of putting things off until Sunday night. Some students are more well-balanced than others. They will make a choice and perhaps wind down on Friday night, without going on, relaxing alone, listening to music, catching up on laundry, or even calling home. Some get a jump on Saturday's homework; it is those students that do not wait until Sunday night. It is also those students that are able to wake up early enough on Saturday to do their homework, in the first place! As young adults, they have to learn how to find harmony in their lives and to not feel out of kilter, too often. They need to learn about the Ying and Yang, the balance of nature and your total being, and take a Life Skills course. Too many times, and it is unfortunate, that students do not know how to make use of their time properly. Girls need time alone, and time for their girlfriends, even if they are going out with someone. An important rule, however, is to not allow a guy to interfere with much needed time alone, so that they can recharge and mentally cope (because many do get depressed), and guys must not interfere in anyone's studies. Springing into adulthood is a challenge in itself; often the first semester of freshman year, students feel â€Å"free† and can get too much out of control. It is their Resident Asssitant (R. A. ) who can help them deal with feelings of being homesick, and help to tame this newly found freedom and deal with coping skills, to avoid that aforementioned depression. They can teach them how to manage their time wisely and cite example as to what happens when they get out of control. To deal with a week of schoolwork, deadlines, lack of sleep, and sometimes too much sleep, among the midst of altered schedules is something that is experienced and learned. It is the good vices, such as time alone, phone calls home, and time to â€Å"chill† that is an art in itself to master, and to make habits †¦ good habits! Start developing those lifelong habits that are necessary to have a balanced life, as you think about entering the workforce in the future! It will be here before you know it!

Hotel Rwanda Some people can’t resist trying to be someone they really aren’t. In the film Hotel Rwanda, the main character changed his own styles just to fit in with the Europeans and think that the Europeans will treat them as if he was a real European. And when times of crisis come along, he finds out that the Europeans have always looked down at them. After that, he understands that what he’s been doing was not himself and he changes. Paul Rusesabagina, the main character, works as a manager in a hotel in Kigali, Rwanda. Because of his work, Paul interacts with a lot of powerful Europeans and he plans on building it up so he can call them for help if there is any need in the future.†¦show more content†¦More and more people were going into the Mille Collines to hide from the Hutus. With high hopes, the Europeans will be sending an intervention force that can help stop the genocide. But when the intervention forces do come, they are only there to escort the foreign nationals back to Europe. There will be no stopping the slaughter. The forces will leave with the foreigners. The U.N. colonel tells Paul that the superpowers and the Europeans think that the Rwandans are dirt and not worth the superpowers to save. The Colonel says that Rwandans are not even African Americans; they are only Africans.
